A link has been established between erectile dysfunction (ED) and coronary artery disease. In one study, 70% of the participants who experienced ED went on to to suffer chest pain or angina related to heart disease. For these men, ED acted as an early warning system of coronary artery disease. Given that the plaques that cause atherosclerosis in the coronary arteries can also affect other arteries in the body, it makes sense that the smaller arteries that allow blood to enter the penis become blocked quicker.
It is a shame that ED medications cannot be taken in conjunction with the nitrates that are frequently prescribed for heart problems, as taken together they can cause a dangerously low drop in blood pressure.
